| Who we
are: A wide ranging group of concerned citizens who love the character of Moscow, Idaho as it is. We know that what makes Moscow a vibrant community is the health of its downtown, human scaled developments, open spaces, and pedestrian friendly neighborhoods. We are strident in our opposition to sprawl on the perimeter of town, and all the consequent effects such developments would have on the welfare our our community. What we are doing: Currently there is a proposal to build a gargantuan 200,000+ sq ft SuperWalmart on the south-east corner of town, paving over 70 acres of farmland. We are working on many fronts to prevent this development from happening. What you need to know: On March 8, the Planning and Zoning Commission recommended denial of Walmart's Motor Business (MB) rezone application. In their Reasoned Statement, P&Z said: "A 40% increase in MB based retail may overburden Moscow's retail stock. One 77 acre development at one moment, all as MB uses, would be out-of-scale and might unduly impact existing infrastructure unless mitigating development aspects are incorporated. The approval of this rezone would permanently remove a large amount of property from the potential for mixed use developmetn and smart growth considerations." Walmart has requested a second public hearing before the City Council to challenge P&Z's recommendation. The hearing is set for May 1, 2006. The Council has also asked P&Z to recommend size cap and dark-store amendments to the City's Large Scale Retail ordinance.
